Enroll your staff in the “Parents on a Mission” three-day train the trainer leadership seminar.
The POM three-day training is a leadership development seminar for organizations with staff:
- Committed to the engagement and empowerment of parents
- Committed to their own desire for personal and professional growth
- Committed to learning, living and implementing the POM six-week curriculum
For too long communities have responded to youth defiance and violence by creating more laws, putting more police on the street, building more parks and pools, and creating more youth programs as a replacement for parent responsibility and authority. The above activities and strategies have run their course. Though well meaning, the research shows they have fallen short in providing the solutions we hoped for. Through POM the Latino Coalition urges communities seeking answers for the betterment and safety of their neighborhoods to STOP DOING THE SAME THINGS AND START DOING THE MAIN THING = Engage and empower parents!

PARENTS ON A MISSION CONTENT & TRAINING OVERVIEW
Parents on a Mission (POM) – is a six-week curriculum to develop parent leadership in the home and empower them to win the loyalty of the hearts and minds of their children. By participating in our POM train the trainer seminar your organization would enable LCCL to provide more POM trainings and courses and support additional local partnerships to enhance services to families served.
The POM objectives are threefold; 1) to build the capacity and increase the effectiveness of parents’ involvement as a community prevention strategy, 2) increase mentoring between the trainers, POM participants, and family members and 3) provide skills enhancement and support for parents of at-risk youth. We appreciate your understanding of our belief that improving the parent leadership skills of low-income, marginalized parents in high-poverty, high-crime communities is just good common practice. As we collaborate with local faith and community based organizations and city and county agencies, we are improving the voice, leadership and resources of under-served families and communities to create indigenous solutions to systemic problems.
During this three-day leadership training participants will:
- Be challenged to higher levels of personal and professional growth and maturity.
- Receive complete instruction, practice, and overview of Leader Manual and Parent Action Guides used in the six-week POM sessions in their community.
- Experience the depth, quality and importance of leading parents through their own emotional process of personal growth.
- Understand the important principles of family history, traditions, and systems that shape the habits, attitudes and mind-sets of families.
- Learn how to reach, recruit, retain and reproduce other parent leaders.
- Receive ongoing coaching as a POM certified leader, as well as, other leadership development teaching and information.
- And much, much, more…
Mission Statement: To turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the hearts of children to their parents, as the best practice for preventing children from choosing negative lifestyles.
Session 1 – POM Orientation
- The orientation serves to introduce participants to the core values and concepts of Parents on a Mission.
- POM emphasizes how parents are the number one asset in the community.
- Parents are empowered to know programs cannot replace them.
- Parents are inspired to embrace their responsibility for raising productive children that ultimately make positive contributions to their community.
- POM will enhance the capacity of single parents, step-parents and grandparents to build successful family relationships.
Session 2 – Parental Personal Growth
The purpose of this session is to help parents understand the importance of their own emotional growth and maturity as leaders in their home.
- Parents are guided through an inside-out approach to personal growth and how it relates to their ability to nurture the growth and maturity of their children.
- The lesson is based on the three principles of:
1) Examining our thought life and the affect our thoughts have on our self-esteem.
2) The power of choice and our capacity to choose our thoughts and responses to past or present circumstances.
3) The power of forgiveness in restoring personal peace and reconciliation of broken relationships.
Session 3 – Earning Respect for Parental Authority
Parental authority is by far the most overlooked principle to raising happy, healthy children that overcome peer pressures and make positive contributions to the community:
- Parents learn how to earn–rather than demand–respect for their authority.
- POM explains why the battle of child obedience must be established early and often and provides principles for accomplishing this.
- Parents will learn skills that will prepare children for dealing with peer pressure in the neighborhood and school campus.
Session 4 – The Proper Use of Discipline
Parental authority and the use of discipline are controversial topics. Many parents are confused and afraid to exercise discipline as the authority figure in the lives of their children.
- This session will define the true meaning of discipline and give guiding principles on how to properly exercise parental authority.
Session 5 – Community Building
Citizenship and the instruction of the individual’s role in the family and community is the purpose of session five. Parents gain insights on:
- The family unit as a microcosm of society.
- How the daily interactions in the home shape a child’s citizenship in public.
- How to give children a sense of purpose and inspire them to use their talents as contributing members of their community.
- Suggested activities are given to assist parents in how to build community in their home.
Session 6 – Trust & Loyalty
One of the key elements of becoming a productive citizen of the community is the willingness to pledge loyalty to ones parents and/or family above everything else. This session examines:
- How parents must understand they are in a daily competition for the loyalty of their children.
- Awareness of the “Four M’s” of competition; Movies, Music, Magazines and Media
POM provides guidance on how to overcome and win the battle for the loyalty of their children as a best practice to prevent children from joining negative lifestyles.
